« Enfant du pays » (tous les Beuve trouvent leurs racines dans la Manche, à Lessay et Vesly), j’ai été très heureux de signer un livre à l’attention de monsieur le Maire, et de discuter longuement de l’histoire de ma famille, mi-ukrainienne mi-normande, tragiquement réunie en Allemagne en 1944.Ī child of the land myself (the center Channel department is the sole cradle of all Beuve), I was delighted to autograph a book for the Mayor and discuss with him at length about the history of my own family, half-ukrainian, half-normand, all tragically reunited somewhere in a German prisoner camp in 1944. All were deeply honored and moved by the welcome given to them by all the inhabitants of Sainte Mère-Église. Instead, he found a community of dedicated players brought together by a common interest and passion for History, be they military men, teachers, students, or even children whose play skill often belies their age. As the long-time Mayor of a town charged with history, often solicited with diverse proposals, he wanted to make sure this group of players, of which he knew so little about, would not be a group of disturbed "nostalgics" or unruly "shoot first and ask questions later" geeks. He then went on to explain his initial reluctance and misgivings to the proposal made months earlier by Arnaud Roy, President of the French Federation of Memoir '44, and Adrien Martinot of Days of Wonder Europe. His message was heard by the players, not as the warning it may have sounded like to innocent by-standers, but rather as a challenge to all participants. Yet at this precise moment, he was signaling the official start of the French Open of Memoir '44. "War is not a game" said Marc Lefèvre, Mayor of Sainte Mère-Église as he spoke into the mike in his town hall on May 8, 2011. Previewed to the public at the occasion of the 3rd French Open Tournament, this fourteenth release of my career as a Publisher of board game books undeniably qualifies as my most moving book launch yet, given its emotionally-charged historical context. Two and a half years of hard labor later, Memoir '44 - The Tactical and Strategic Guide is finally ready. Also, tournaments and federations were in place.Īll the prerequisites to launch a Tactical and Strategic Guide for Memoir '44 seemed at hand, and I resolved to contact the game's publisher, Days of Wonder. With practice, I discovered a game that is deeper than it appears at first sight and that has attracted a dedicated, international community of players drawn together by a common passion and respect not just for gaming, but also for the History and commemoration of World War II. Some years back, when I first stumbled onto this board game, I surprised myself falling back into childhood, delighted to play for hours on end with little plastic soldiers.
